Church of St. Barbora

A three-aisled Gothic church built by ambitious townsmen on the site of the Prague Chapter beyond the town walls (beyond the province of the Sedlec monastery). Construction of the church began in 1388; according to several sources the church was intended to be twice as large as it actually is. Work on the church was interrupted several times and was not definitively completed until 1905.

The building was ensured by the Prague building works during 1330 - 1420 and the influence of the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec is apparent here. Built at the end of the 14th century on the site of a Medieval ore merchant's market. In 1470, the church burnt down and it was gradually the tower and vaulted ceilings were built after the fire. The famous artist of Czech Baroque Petr Brandl is buried in the church.

It belongs among the oldest church buildings in Bohemia (10th-11th century). The church interior is mainly Baroque. Below the presbytery's floor is a crypt (1520), which served as the city's ossuary. As of 2007, the Gothic tower of the church has been made accessible to the public as a viewing point with a unique view of the junction of the Labe and Vltava River.
