Church of St. Barbora

Church of St. Barbora

A three-aisled Gothic church built by ambitious townsmen on the site of the Prague Chapter beyond the town walls (beyond the province of the Sedlec monastery). Construction of the church began in 1388; according to several sources the church was intended to be twice as large as it actually is. Work on the church was interrupted several times and was not definitively completed until 1905.

The building was ensured by the Prague building works during 1330 - 1420 and the influence of the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec is apparent here. The original project counted with a two-tower church, however the second tower was never completed. From the 1430s to 1620 the Utraquist Church administrated it. An interesting Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque inventory has been preserved in the church...

Sázava - monastery

Sázava - monastery

Foundation of the monastery was initiated in the 11th century, by the later canonized Procope, who became its first abbot. Until 1080 - until papal ban - local church services were given in a Slavonic language. The tradition of the Slavonic liturgy was restored only by Charles IV in the 14th century, when the originally Romanesque building got its Gothic look. Relics of this time include e.g. the Church...
